Google Ads for Vein Specialists

Vein patients rarely search for “endovenous ablation.” They search for what they feel and see: aching, heavy legs, ankles that swell by evening, bulging veins they’ve had for years, spider veins they want gone before summer. Netembark builds vein clinic Google Ads campaigns around that language, and keeps cosmetic and medical vein care apart so each gets the right message and budget.

Cosmetic and medical vein care are two different campaigns

Cosmetic vein care (spider veins and small surface veins treated with sclerotherapy) is usually self-pay. Searchers compare price, results, and convenience, and the decision looks a lot like a med spa purchase.

Medical vein care (symptomatic varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency) is evaluated with duplex ultrasound and often treated with ablation, closure, or phlebectomy. Insurance may cover treatment when the patient meets the plan’s medical-necessity criteria. Searchers care about symptoms, the physician’s qualifications, and coverage.

In one campaign, these audiences blur: cosmetic shoppers click medical ads and vice versa, and the reports can’t tell you which service is working. We run them as separate campaigns with separate landing pages, ad copy, and conversion goals.

Policy notes for vein clinics

  • Health category limits. Google’s Health in personalized advertising page includes chronic conditions and “invasive medical procedures, including… surgical procedures, or injections.” Sclerotherapy is an injection, and ablation is a procedure. Under the Personalized advertising policy, these ads can’t use advertiser-curated audiences: no remarketing lists, no Customer Match patient uploads, no lookalikes. Predefined Google audiences (including demographics) and location targeting are still allowed.
  • Sclerosant and device names. Sclerosing agents are prescription drugs, and closure systems are branded devices. Under Google’s Restricted drug terms policy, US advertisers need certification to keyword-target prescription drug terms (check names against Google’s monitored list). Device brand names are trademarks. Bid on “sclerotherapy” and “vein closure” rather than brand names unless certification and manufacturer authorization are in place.
  • Claims. Avoid “permanent” or “guaranteed” results. Google’s Misrepresentation policy prohibits presenting an improbable result as the likely outcome.

Call tracking and conversion tracking

  • Use separate tracking numbers for cosmetic and medical campaigns so you can see which line drives calls (call conversion tracking).
  • Count ultrasound evaluations or consults that staff confirm, not every call. Record outcomes in a system covered by a business associate agreement and send Google only the click ID, a generic conversion name, and a timestamp through offline conversion import.
  • Leave enhanced conversions off for these conversions. Google’s Customer data policies exclude health-related conversions from enhanced conversions measurement.
  • Full checklist: HIPAA-aware conversion tracking for Google Ads.

Match types, negatives, and radius

Match types. Exact and phrase match on condition, treatment, and symptom-plus-specialist terms. Symptom terms usually get lower bids and their own ad group.

Vein negative keywords (added to the shared medical lists for jobs, school, DIY, free, and insurance-only research; see about negative keywords):

ThemeExample negatives
Acute clot / emergency (default)“blood clot,” “DVT symptoms,” “pulmonary embolism,” “clot in lung”
Home remedies and retail“varicose vein cream,” “apple cider vinegar,” “essential oil,” “compression socks amazon” (unless you sell them), “spider vein makeup,” “leg concealer”
Phlebotomy and IV“phlebotomy class,” “phlebotomist,” “vein finder,” “IV vein,” “find a vein for blood draw”
Careers & training“vascular tech jobs,” “RVT,” “ultrasound school,” “vascular surgeon salary”
Unrelated“vein tattoo,” “vein pop,” “vascularity gym,” “vein in eye” (unless relevant)

Radius. Medical vein care often draws from a wider area than cosmetic sclerotherapy, especially when a practice has fewer locations. We set radii per campaign and per office, target people in or regularly in each area through Google’s advanced location options, and adjust based on where evaluated patients live.

Compression products, Shopping, and ChatGPT ads

  • Shopping. Clinics that sell compression stockings online can use Google Shopping. Healthcare products fall under Merchant Center’s Shopping ads and listings policies. See Google Shopping for healthcare products. .
  • ChatGPT ads. OpenAI’s ad policies restrict health services. In the US, OpenAI may approve “minimally invasive cosmetic procedures” case by case, which may cover cosmetic spider vein treatment. OpenAI doesn’t allow “invasive or high-risk medical procedures.” Whether a given vein procedure qualifies is OpenAI’s call, so treat ChatGPT as a test channel for the cosmetic line only, if approved.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should vein clinics separate cosmetic and medical vein campaigns?

Yes. Cosmetic spider vein treatment is usually self-pay and price-driven, while medical treatment for symptomatic varicose veins and venous insufficiency is evaluated with ultrasound and often involves insurance. Separate campaigns let each have its own keywords, ad copy, landing page, and budget, and make reporting clearer.

Should vein clinics bid on insurance-coverage searches?

Often, yes, for medical vein care. People asking whether insurance covers varicose vein treatment are frequently close to booking. Send them to a page that explains, without promises, that coverage depends on the plan and the evaluation, and exclude only insurance-only research terms and plans the practice doesn’t accept.

How should vein clinics handle blood clot and DVT searches in Google Ads?

Exclude them by default. Searches about blood clot or DVT symptoms can signal a medical emergency, and most outpatient vein clinics aren’t set up to evaluate suspected acute DVT the same day. Landing pages should also tell anyone with sudden leg swelling, pain, or shortness of breath to seek emergency care.

Can vein clinics use sclerotherapy drug names as Google Ads keywords?

Not without certification. Sclerosing agents are prescription drugs, and Google’s Restricted drug terms policy requires US advertisers to be certified to keyword-target prescription drug terms. Prescription drug terms can appear in ad text and landing pages without certification, but keywords should focus on the treatment, such as sclerotherapy.

What negative keywords should a vein clinic use?

Beyond standard lists for jobs, schools, DIY, and free services, vein clinics should usually exclude acute clot and emergency terms, home remedies and creams, retail compression products if they don’t sell them, phlebotomy and IV terms, vascular technologist career terms, and fitness vascularity searches.

Can vein clinics advertise on ChatGPT?

Possibly for cosmetic services, with approval. OpenAI’s ad policies restrict health services but say OpenAI may approve minimally invasive cosmetic procedures case by case in the US. OpenAI doesn’t allow ads for invasive or high-risk medical procedures, and approval for any specific treatment is up to OpenAI.
