Google Ads for Orthopedic Practices
A teenager’s ACL tear, a retiree’s worn-out hip, a warehouse worker’s back injury, and a Saturday wrist fracture can all come to the same orthopedic group, but they search in completely different ways. Netembark builds orthopedic Google Ads accounts that keep those patients apart, so each service line gets the budget, message, and landing page it needs.
An orthopedic group is several practices in one account
Put joint replacement, spine, sports medicine, hand surgery, and urgent care in one campaign and the cheapest, highest-volume searches (usually generic “orthopedic doctor near me” and urgent injuries) take most of the budget. Surgeons who want more joint or spine consults then see little from search.
We build separate campaigns by service line, and often by location. Each has its own budget, keywords, ads, landing page, and conversion goal: a walk-in visit for urgent care, a consult request for joint replacement, an appointment for sports medicine.

Orthopedic service lines and patient intent
Joint replacement
Knee, hip, and shoulder replacement, including partial knee replacement and specific surgical approaches. Searchers are often older adults or adult children helping a parent, and they research for weeks: “knee replacement surgeon near me,” “hip replacement recovery time,” “partial vs total knee replacement.” Landing pages should cover candidacy, recovery, the surgeon’s credentials, and how to book a consult.
Sports medicine
ACL tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder dislocations, tennis and golfer’s elbow, and sports injuries in young athletes. Parents search for kids (“sports medicine doctor for teen athlete”). Adults search by injury or by “sports medicine near me.” Urgency is moderate: people want to be seen this week.
Spine
Herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spinal fusion, and minimally invasive spine surgery. Many spine patients want to avoid surgery, so pages that lead with evaluation and conservative options, then explain surgical choices, tend to fit the searcher’s mindset. Spine searches overlap with chiropractic and pain management, so negatives and ad copy should make clear this is a physician practice.
Hand, wrist, and elbow
Carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, hand and wrist fractures, ganglion cysts, and arthritis of the hand. Searches are often specific (“carpal tunnel surgeon near me,” “trigger finger treatment”). These terms often cost less than joint and spine terms, and small, tight ad groups work well.
Orthopedic urgent care and fracture care
Walk-in orthopedic care for sprains, suspected fractures, and acute injuries is one of the most time-sensitive things you can advertise. Searches like “orthopedic urgent care near me,” “broken wrist walk in,” and “ankle sprain urgent care open now” need location assets, call assets, accurate hours, and an ad schedule that matches when the clinic is open. Ads should never suggest that an emergency (such as an open fracture or loss of sensation) should wait for an urgent care visit.
Non-surgical care and injections
Cortisone injections, joint injections, bracing, and physical therapy referrals. Name the treatment plainly and avoid outcome promises. Brand names of injectable products may be prescription drug terms (see policy notes).

Workers’ comp and auto-injury searches
Orthopedic groups often treat work injuries and auto-accident injuries, and searchers use phrases like “workers comp orthopedic doctor” or “orthopedic doctor after car accident.” These can be valuable, but law firms and lead generators also bid on them, and some searchers want a lawyer, not a doctor.
We recommend a separate campaign with its own landing page that explains which claims and insurers the practice works with, plus negatives for legal-intent terms (“lawyer,” “attorney,” “settlement,” “how much is my case worth”). Whether you take workers’ comp or letter-of-protection patients is a practice decision. The campaign should reflect it accurately.

Patient-intent examples
These are illustrative intent patterns, not search volume data. We validate every keyword in Keyword Planner and your search terms report.
| Example search | Likely intent | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| “hip replacement surgeon near me” | Comparing surgeons | Joint campaign; surgeon pages; consult CTA |
| “torn meniscus doctor near me” | Wants to be seen soon | Sports medicine campaign |
| “orthopedic urgent care open now” | Immediate need | Urgent care campaign; call and location assets; hours accurate |
| “workers comp orthopedic doctor near me” | Work-injury patient | Workers’ comp campaign; dedicated page |
| “carpal tunnel surgery near me” | Ready for a consult | Hand campaign; exact/phrase |
| “orthopedic pillow” | Retail product | Negative keyword |
| “stem cell knee injection” | Regenerative interest | Policy review before bidding (see below) |
Policy notes for orthopedic advertisers
- Health category targeting limits. Google’s Health in personalized advertising page names “treatments for chronic health conditions like diabetes or arthritis” and covers “surgical procedures, or injections.” Under the Personalized advertising policy, sensitive-category ads can’t use advertiser-curated audiences: no remarketing lists, no Customer Match, no lookalikes. Orthopedic campaigns should be search-first.
- Regenerative and stem cell treatments. Google’s Healthcare and medicines policy doesn’t allow promotion of speculative or experimental medical treatments, and allows cell or gene therapy promotion in the US only for FDA-licensed or approved therapies by the license holder (purely educational content is the exception). Ads for “stem cell” joint injections are likely to be disapproved. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) needs careful, non-promissory language. Review these before launch rather than after a disapproval.
- Prescription drug terms. Brand names of injectable medications are prescription drug terms under Google’s Restricted drug terms policy. US advertisers need certification to keyword-target them. Bid on the treatment (“knee injection,” “joint injection”) instead.
- Claims. Avoid guarantees (“pain-free in days”) and unsupported superiority claims. Google’s Misrepresentation policy prohibits claims that present an improbable result as the likely outcome.

Tracking calls, walk-ins, and consults
This page is general information about advertising platform policies and privacy practices. It isn’t legal advice. Practices should confirm their HIPAA and state-law obligations with qualified healthcare counsel.
- Urgent care: calls and directions requests are the main signals. Use call conversion tracking with a minimum call length, and consider a “walk-in check-in” page with no patient data passed to tags.
- Surgical consults: count consults that staff confirm, recorded in a system covered by a business associate agreement, then send Google only the click ID, a generic conversion name, and a timestamp via offline conversion import.
- No enhanced conversions for these conversions. Google’s Customer data policies exclude health-related conversions from enhanced conversions measurement.
- Keep names, injuries, and procedures out of URLs, page titles, and form data that ad tags can read. See our HIPAA-aware conversion tracking guide for the full checklist.
Match types, negatives, and radius
Match types. Exact and phrase match on procedure-, injury-, and condition-plus-location terms. Broad match is a later test, only once confirmed consult and visit data is flowing.
Orthopedic negative keywords (added to the shared medical lists for jobs, school, DIY, free, and insurance-only research; see about negative keywords):
| Theme | Example negatives |
|---|---|
| Retail “orthopedic” products | “orthopedic shoes,” “orthopedic pillow,” “orthopedic mattress,” “orthopedic dog bed,” “orthopedic chair,” “knee brace,” “back brace,” “kt tape” |
| Home exercise and DIY | “exercises,” “stretches,” “at home,” “youtube,” “physical therapy exercises” |
| Careers & training | “orthopedic surgeon salary,” “orthopedic PA jobs,” “orthopedic nurse,” “ortho tech,” “residency” |
| Legal intent (workers’ comp/PI campaigns) | lawyer, attorney, “settlement,” “case worth,” “law firm” |
| Other providers | chiropractor, “massage,” “acupuncture” (unless offered), veterinary |
Radius. Joint replacement and complex spine patients travel farther than urgent care patients. We set tighter radii around each urgent care location, wider ones for surgical service lines, and target people in or regularly in each area through Google’s advanced location options.
ChatGPT ads? OpenAI’s ad policies list “invasive or high-risk medical procedures” among health ads it doesn’t allow. Orthopedic surgery campaigns should assume they’re ineligible. OpenAI does list “hospitals and urgent care” among US categories it may approve case by case.

Frequently asked questions
How should an orthopedic practice structure its Google Ads campaigns?
Separate campaigns by service line, such as joint replacement, spine, sports medicine, hand and wrist, orthopedic urgent care, and workers’ comp, and by location if the group has several offices. Each campaign gets its own budget, keywords, ads, landing page, and conversion goal, so urgent and high-volume searches don’t take the budget meant for surgical consults.
Should orthopedic urgent care run its own Google Ads campaign?
Yes. Urgent care searches are immediate and local, and they convert by phone call or walk-in. A separate campaign lets you use call and location assets, a tight radius, and an ad schedule that matches clinic hours, without competing for budget with joint replacement or spine campaigns.
Can orthopedic practices advertise stem cell or regenerative treatments on Google Ads?
Often not. Google’s Healthcare and medicines policy doesn’t allow promotion of speculative or experimental treatments. In the US it allows cell or gene therapy promotion only for FDA-licensed or approved therapies by the license holder, aside from purely educational content. Review any regenerative offering against the policy before advertising it.
How should orthopedic practices handle workers’ comp and auto-injury searches?
Run them as a separate campaign with a dedicated landing page that explains which claims and insurers the practice works with. Add negative keywords for legal-intent searches such as lawyer, attorney, and settlement, because law firms and lead generators compete for the same terms.
What negative keywords should an orthopedic practice use?
Beyond standard lists for jobs, schools, DIY, and free services, orthopedic practices should usually exclude retail orthopedic products such as orthopedic shoes, pillows, mattresses, and braces, home exercise searches, career terms like orthopedic PA jobs, and legal-intent terms in any injury campaign.
Can orthopedic surgeons advertise on ChatGPT?
Probably not for surgical procedures. OpenAI’s ad policies list invasive or high-risk medical procedures among health ads it doesn’t allow. OpenAI says it may approve some US healthcare categories case by case, including hospitals and urgent care.
